How to choose a trustworthy home healthcare provider

Home healthcare in India is largely unregulated. Anyone can call themselves a 'home nurse'. Use this checklist before signing any agreement.

Non-negotiables

  • NABH-aligned protocols and written SOPs
  • Verified nursing council registration for every nurse
  • Background-checked, in-house staff — not freelancers
  • A named care manager you can call 24×7
  • Clear escalation pathway to a hospital partner
  • Transparent, itemised pricing — no surprise add-ons

Good signs

  • Free home assessment before any commitment
  • Daily written nursing notes shared with the family
  • Doctor oversight included in the package
  • Willingness to start with a short trial

Red flags

  • Asks for large upfront payments
  • No written care plan
  • Cannot name the supervising doctor
  • Replaces nurses every few days without notice
